Harmony and Abundance
"To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace and peace to you from God our Father" - Colossians 1:2
"People are able to hear only what they are ready to hear.
God speaks to each of us in a personal way, taking into consideration our strength, wisdom, and preparation." - Rabbi Lawrence Kushner
[Rabbi Lawrence Kushner, Jewish Spirituality]
Paul, a mentor to young churches, opens his letter with more than a simple salutation. His words seem to be an attempt to orient their listening. He speaks of grace and peace. While Paul is writing in Greek his first language would have been Hebrew. When Paul uses the word peace then, he would have had in mind the Hebrew word, "shalom." The Jewish definition of this word is much more than a restful state or an absence of violence. In speaking of shalom Paul would be reminding this his listeners of Jesus teaching on the abundant life. (John 10:10)
“Shalom has to do with blessing, richness, abundance and a far-reaching harmony that permeates and characterizes all of our relationships.”
- Colossians Remixed
